Ways to complain

The International Maritime Labour Convention guarantees seafarers comprehensive rights to complain. If they work at sea, they have the right to complain about any violation regarding working and living conditions on board. The International Maritime Labour Convention and the German Maritime Labour Act stipulate that you should direct your complaint first to your direct superior, afterwards to the master or your shipping company.

In addition, you have the right to directly contact the public complaint office of the flag state - on German-flagged ships this is our job. You can email your complaint to ism-mlc@bg-verkehr.de or contact us on the phone + 49 40 36 137-213 (outside the usual office hours: + 49 40 36 137-100).

We investigate every complaint diligently and thus ensure that your rights are protected.

Health care on board

The German Flag ensures top tier medical care on board: The Maritime Medical Handbook assists seafarers with a practical approach just as much as the telemedical maritime assistance service in CuxhavenWe also inform about selected health matters such as falling ill with Malaria or the right food hygiene on board.

Psychological support

A serious accident on deck, a drowning crew member, a maritime casualty, a sea rescue or even piracy: there are accidents and tragedies on board that are hard to forget and that continue to unsettle. Such events are often too much to cope with for those affected and can lead to severe psychological reactions and illnesses.

The German Flag support seafarers to deal with traumatizing events - for example with:

  • trauma guides at the BG Verkehr, whose main job is to very quickly mediate options for help and therapy by external psycho therapists and
  • the flyer "Psychological crisis", which explains the most common symptoms and contains contact data for available assistance services.
