Membership
Seafarers domiciled in Germany or in other EU-member states are covered by unemployment insurance
Seafarers, who
- are employed on a seagoing ship flying the German flag, and
- are domiciled in Germany or in either a member state of the European Union (EU) or of the European Economic Area (EEA),
are automatically, - by law -, made members of the German statutory unemployment insurance by their employer.
Not covered by unemployment insurance are seafarers who:
- are employed for low pay of not more than 450 € per month (mini job), or
- are students in primary or secondary education, at university or college, or
- have reached the standard minimum pensionable age.
