A competitive German merchant fleet is of great interest for Germany with its export orientated economy. Hence why, the federal government offers extra support with subsidies for ancillary labour costs and for training places amounting to around 46 million euros per year (including ships flying the EU flag). In addition, the Stiftung Schifffahrtsstandort Deutschland (German shipping foundation) grants around 10 million euros per year for training, qualification and advanced training of seafarers.
