Dangerous goods (IMDG)
Dangerous goods in packaged form must be handled with care
Dangerous goods in packaged form are cargoes which pose a threat to life, health or the environment due to their properties and condition during sea transport.
The „International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code“ (resolution MSC.501(105)) contains internationally mandatory requirements for the handling and stowage of dangerous goods carried at sea. The IMDG code is complemented by regulations of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS convention). In German law the IMDG code is implemented with the "Gefahrgutverodnung See" (Ordinance on the Transport of Dangerous Goods).
Document of compliance for the carriage of dangerous goods in packaged form
Ships carrying dangerous goods in packaged form need according to SOLAS II-2/19 and VII a document of compliance issued by the flag state administration. This document is issued by the ship safety division of the BG Verkehr upon a survey by a recognized organisation (classification society).
This is where you can find information on qualifications required when carrying dangerous goods.
