Membership
Seafarers domiciled in Germany or in other EU member states are covered by the statutory pension insurance
Seafarers, who are
- employed on a seagoing ship flying the German flag, and
- domiciled in Germany or in either a member state of the European Union (EU) or of the European Economic Area (EEA),
are by law and automatically members of the German statuary pension insurance. Their responsible pension insurance fund is the "Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See" (KBS).
Seafarers from outside Europe are generally subject to compulsory membership in the statutory pension insurance, may however be exempted on application of their employer.
Seafarers employed for low pay of not more than 450 € per month (mini job) are not subject to the statutory pension insurance.
